Course Description
The studio will be divided into groups, with beginning students working on the basics of figure drawing and the fundamentals of oil painting while more advanced students work on figure painting, portraiture, color composition, and draftsmanship and design (an understanding of the abstract qualities underlying realistic or traditional art). In draftsmanship, students will learn how to plan serious paintings and significant projects, understand how great compositions are put together, and discover how to use the skills of designers and draftsmen.
Within this framework, students will be taught a direct approach to drawing and painting. Students will learn how to resolve problems toward a completed painting while gaining command of their art materials by working from life. Models will pose for two weeks at a time to allow students ample opportunity to build the traditional skills needed. Including techniques influenced by John Singer Sargent, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne, the course is designed to help beginners develop a progressive approach to the art of painting and to help advanced students improve on their skills.
Let us equip you with the traditional skills needed to pursue an artistic vocation while exploring your unique characteristics as an artist—all the basics with a broad philosophy. Beginning students will work on the basics of drawing and the fundamentals of oil painting. Advanced students will focus on figure painting, portraiture, color, still life, composition, and design. Working intensively, you’ll learn to resolve problems while gaining control of the medium and skillfully commanding the materials. The instructor will be present two days
